Artist: Kevin Graham ✦ Sets: MI #456; MII #106

Sets: MI #2016; MII #106
Profile: Patrick’s pencil drawings are finely detailed (e.g. Rohan warrior). His many coloured portrait-type sketches, blending bold colours, evoke strong emotion (see eerie AR Gimli and SOTD). And his painted scenes are filled with poignancy (e.g. the Aragorn and Arwen) or dramatic action (as in Frodo facing the Nazgûl at Osgiliath).

Artist: Ingrid Hardy ✦ Set: MII #206
Profile: There is an ethereal aura overlaying Ingrid’s art. Her sketches range in artistic styles from fine line drawings (see White flag); muted wash portraits (such as in Sam watching Rosie); to vibrant brilliance (e.g. her AR One Ring surrounded by vivid blue).

Artist: Chris Henderson ✦ Set: MII #484
Profile: Chris created expressive sets of portraits and dramatic scenes in a range of styles: shaded pencil (e.g. Merry); expressive grey wash with dark accents (as in the coronation Aragorn); sepia tones (such as the possessed Bilbo), blue wash (e.g. Galadriel in her boat); two-colour images (e.g. smiling Boromir with green background) and a few multi-coloured paintings (such as the Argonath).

Artist: Tristan Henry-Wilson ✦ Set: MII #506
Profile: Many of Tristan’s sketches appear to have suffered from the rush to meet the submission deadline. However, his artist returns, though simple line and hatching, dramatically capture the intense feeling of the scene (see AR Aragorn).

Artist: Gabriel Hernandez ✦ Sets: EVO #80; MI #100
Profile: Gabriel style varied from shadowy graphite portraits (such as AR Troll), to lines with highlights (e.g. orc) and bold coloured portraiture (as in Gollum). His characterisations have a distinct dramatic feel, especially his ‘bad guy’ portrayals (e.g. AR battle Orc) and two-card composite panels (such as Strider/ King Elessar composite).

Artist: Jessica Hickman ✦ Sets: MI #556; MII #56
Profile: Jessica’s pencil drawings can be subtle portrait outlines with highlights (such as Pippin) or bold lined characterisations with a prop (see Aragorn with Andúril). However, her muted-tone coloured sketches accentuate a sense of drama (e.g. Gollum’s poignant stare from hypnotic eyes).

Artist: Tom Hodges ✦ Sets: EVO #1006; MI #406; MII #109
Profile: Tom created his portraits (often stylised) from simple lines with white or coloured highlights (see Éomer). His scenes typically have an unusual perspective, in two-tone (e.g. in two-Frodo fending off Shelob) or boldly coloured (such as explosive image of the Eye of Barad-dûr). His Evolution AMs are dramatic in detail and design (see panel of Legolas and Elven Army at Helms Deep).

Artist: James Hodgkins
Sets: EVO #1000; MI #50
Profile: James’s style changed from Evolution bold inked caricatures to MI mostly full coloured sketches – at times wildly expressive (such as AR screaming orc) or overlaid with a dramatic accent colour (see gold Gandalf).

Artist: Josh Howard ✦ Sets: MI #200/250; MII #?
Profile: Josh’s main style is flowing lined (often shaded) pencil portraits (e.g. Gandalf), which when adapted for stylised coloured sketches enhances the characterisation (see AR Arwen).

Artist: Mary Huang ✦ Sets: MI #175; MII #106
Profile: There is an ominous feel in Mary’s brown pencil portraits (see Gandalf with light). However, Mary’s art ranges from simple line drawings with a message (such as Arwen’s ‘There is still hope’); delicate muted tones (as with Éowyn, with golden trusses); splash of intense colour (e.g. Aragorn holding the palantir); to the shimmering set of fantasy Arwens with silver highlights (as with Arwen on Asfaloth).

Artist: Chad Hurd ✦ Set: MII #256
Profile: Chad’s vibrant colour in bold outlines creates a sense of drama in both stylized portraits (such as his AR Gandalf in snow storm; unique red Denethor) and iconic scenes (as in the AR Éowyn facing the fellbeast).

Artist: Rafael Kayanan ✦ Sets: EVO #250; MI #6
Profile: Known for his spectacular sketches in the Evolution set, Rafael created the stunning six card collage for the MI etched panel (see Sam, Frodo and Gollum piece).

Artist: Lee Kohse ✦ Sets: MI #306; MII #206
Profile: Soft shaded or hatched pencil is Lee’s basic style, which creates a pensive or alluring mood (see Galadriel, plain pencil Legolas). However, Lee heightens the drama with the addition of colour highlights (as in the AR colour highlighted Legolas), and in full colour oil, Lee creates profound poignancy (e.g. AR Elrond and Arwen panel).

Artist: Achilleas Kokkinakis ✦ Sets: Hobbit: UJ, DOS, BFA
Profile: There is a dynamism and depth of feeling in Achilleas’s art, created by the intricate detail (see Thranduil’s kingdom) and use of powerful vibrant colours (eg Smaug attacking Laketown).

Artist: Brian Kong ✦ Set: MII #81
Profile: Brian creates expressive ink drawings (see Frodo and Sam), however, his art comes alive with the application of colour in different forms: in bold vivid highlights (as with Arwen’s red dress), in full colour, in sensitive, poignant moments (e.g. AR Éowyn offering up the goblet) or the height of dramatic moments (such as in AR Gandalf facing the Balrog’s fiery whip).

Artist: Karen Krajenbrink ✦ Set: MII #259
Profile: In pencil, part or full (usually muted) colour, Karen achieves gentle characterisation, however, there can be a dramatic edge to her depictions (as in the AR wide-eyed Grima).

Artist: Jim Kyle ✦ Sets: MI #256; MII #585
Profile: Jim’s style ranged widely from ‘realism’ in simple smooth pencil and ink shading (e.g. Gandalf at Bag End); fine detail hatching and white highlighting (such as Gandalf with pipe; Frodo); dramatic tones (as Saruman’s hand over the palantir); emotive muted full colour (see AR crying Éowyn ); to a whimsical cartoon-style in bold colours (e.g. Gimli’s ‘…eyes of a hawk…’).

Artist: Ray Lago ✦ Set: MII #~300
Profile: At the time of the MII release Ray’s art encompassed four main styles: detailed flowing ink lines (see Éomer); hazy muted pencil (as in Éowyn); detailed ink and tone (as his official AR Faramir), and rough colour wash (e.g. his official AR battle troll).
Following the release, Ray did a number of exceptional full coloured sketches (e.g. Boromir and Faramir) which were bought as official ARs, however, later it was revealed that they were unofficial after-markets.

Artist: Peter Lazarski ✦ Set: MII #?
Profile: Peter ‘makes comics: imaginary monsters’, for MII these were fluid line and hatch characterisations (see Moria orc).

Artist: Mike Lilly ✦ Sets: EVO #150; MI #100

Artist: Leah Mangue ✦ Sets: MI #856; MII #149
Profile: Leah’s MI style was primarily emotive soft pencilled portraits (see the staring Merry) with some subtle colour accents (as in the screaming Éowyn). While Leah’s MII sketches feature amazing pencil drawings (e.g. skulking Gollum), she achieved further dramatic depth in her full-coloured images (such as in AR Arwen). However, exceptional for their intensity of action are a set of AMs purchased as official ARs (e.g. three-card panel Battle of Helms Deep).

Artist: Randy Martinez ✦ Set: EVO #1000
Profile: Randy contributed 1,000 fine pencil caricatures to the Evolution set. On these Randy was officially able to create AM sketches. Typically commissioned by collectors, these cover a diverse range of LOTR scenes, from haunting poignancy (such as Gandalf and Pippin Minas Tirith sequence) to terrifyingly dramatic moments (e.g. Éowyn being throttled by the Witch-king).

Artist: Danuta Mayer ✦ Set: PSC #1

Danuta’s art is sensitive and exquisite, infused with an ethereal aura and delicate details, as can be seen in her stunning PSC of Théodred’s funeral.

Artist: Clay McCormack ✦ Set: MII #129
Profile: Mark’s blocked ink with white highlighting provides an intensity and drama to his sketches (e.g. Boromir and shard of Narsil). To accentuate this and add a unique horrific impact to his Boromir AR (having been struck by the first arrow), Mark added blood splatters (see pierced Boromir).

Profile: John’s art features bold ink drawings with dramatic white accents portraying raw emotion (e.g. pensive Gandalf).

Artist: Mark McHaley ✦ Set: MII #156

Artist: Jake Minor ✦ Set: MII #256
Profile: Jake’s art features soft pencil outlines (e.g. Gollums) and ink lines and block for action scenes (such as Éowyn and Witch-king). Jake also employs interesting perspectives in order to heighten the drama in his coloured ARs (e.g. the true-form Witch-king).

Artist: Rich Molinelli ✦ Sets: EVO #150; MI #206; MII #359
Profile: Whether in simple pencil lines (e.g. Éowyn), shaded (such as Faramir) and blocked inks (e.g. Frodo) or full bold colour (AR Arwen), Rich features boldly drawn stylised portraits. For many of his scenes, he embellishes his drawings with vivid colours which intensify the drama (e.g. green dead Boromir).

Artist: Carly Monardo ✦ Set: MII #125
Profile: Carly’s fine line drawings have a simplicity but emotive feel. To accentuate this, Carly has depicted dramatic poses/expressions (as in the sidewise glancing Aragorn).

Artist: Monte Moore ✦ Sets: EVO #150; MII #81
Profile: There is a gripping rawness in Monte’s pencil drawings, especially in the ‘monsters’ where he depicts frenzied action (e.g. attacking orcs). However, Monte enhances the drama and poignancy in his rich full-coloured AR scenes (as in Brego coming to Aragorn’s aid).

Artist: Jon Morris ✦ Set: MII #306
Profile: Jon’s cartoon-style has a fluidity and simplicity that conveys the essence (often humour) of a scene (see Gandalf hitting his head). However, they can also powerfully portray darker images (such as the Nazgûl stabbing the beds) and intense poignancy (e.g. Sam with his family).

Artist: Joanne Mutch
Sets: MI #150; MII #?

Artist: Jake Myler ✦ Sets: EVO #506; MI #300
Profile: Typically Jake’s Evolution sketches were simple ink portraits (see Aragorn). For MI, his sketches evolved with bold splashes of colours highlighting characterisation (e.g. orange Gandalf). This technique was extended to the striking layering of intense colour in his commissioned Evolution AMs, conveying the intensity of drama (see Sam restraining Frodo from putting on the Ring at Osgiliath).

Artist: Nik Neocleous ✦ Set: MII #139

Artist: Jon Ocampo
Sets: MI #256; MII #?
Profile: Pencil, ink or full vibrant colour, Jon’s sketches typically have a certain ‘quirkiness’ (e.g. Grishnákh); unique angle (see Frodo and Ring) or are of an unusual scene (e.g. AR Legolas jumping off the Mumakil), all together effectively enhancing the characterisation and drama.

Artist: Mike Oeming ✦ Set: MI #100

Artist: William ONeill ✦ Set: MI #300
Profile: William’s simple fluid lines and shading (see Legolas), often coloured (e.g. Denethor) give an expressive feel to his characterisations.

Artist: Shelli Paroline ✦ Set: MII #156

Artist: Sean Pence ✦ Sets: MI #281; MI #56
Profile: Sean achieves amazing likeness in fine line and shaded drawings. In each of these portraits, he portrays powerful characterisations and emotions, for example, of concern (see Frodo) and of joy (as in Sam). Sean embellished a few portraits with a colour accent, which enhances the image (e.g. MII AR Éowyn).

Artist: Tony Perna ✦ Set: MII #206
Profile: Tony’s art encompasses a diverse range of styles: soft shaded and hatched pencils (see Gollum), very fine and detailed inks (e.g. helmeted Gimli), blocked inkwork (such as Frodo & Shelob) and dramatic coloured sketches (as in Mt Doom erupting).

Artist: Connie Persampieri ✦ Set: MI #356

Realism imbued with an aura of fantasy, their creations often extend over spectacular multiple panels (such as the four panel Frodo holding out the Ring) and in some cases, depict two parts of a character’s persona (e.g. the Éowyn two-card panel).
Their DOS and BFA AP oils stunningly depict epic scenes (see Smaug/Bilbo panels).
Jason and Jack were commissioned to paint scenes unavailable from official Topps sketches. Always willing to accept the challenge of a unique perspective, they added over 100 images to the LOTRarts storyboards, each a dramatic portrayal of the scene (e.g. 12-card panel of the Last Alliance battle). However, their art extends beyond sketches to breathtaking larger works (see painting of a pensive Aragorn).

Artist: Tim Proctor ✦ Sets: PSC #4

Profile: In his series of graphite shaded sketches, David has achieved an ethereal touch to expressive characterisations (e.g. Sauron’s eye/Ring) and iconic scenes (as in Frodo’s run into Mt Doom). In his full-colour sketches (mostly for his ARs), David created dramatic portraits (such as AR Arwen) and exquisitely poignant scenes (see Sam cradling Frodo).
David’s UJ AP sketches are powerfully dynamic portrayals (such as, Bilbo about to strike Gollum).

Artist: Juan Carlos Ramos ✦ Sets: EVO #200; MI #?
